Legacy Designer Kelly Muir created a light and open space with bright white perimeter cabinets and a calm colour palette. The original kitchen had outdated cabinetry and an unattractive green tile with large grout lines on the backsplash and countertops. Seating was limited to a plastic table placed diagonally in the room because of the limited floor space. The appliances were improperly supported – in the before photos you’ll notice that the microwave was simply placed on top of the oven.
Kelly made creative use of the limited floor space by designing a multifunction island in painted maple (slate gray) which combines space for sitting and eating (great for entertaining!) with another functional food prep surface and under counter storage. She also relocated the microwave to the island, opening up prime space for upper cabinets.
You’ll notice that the countertops and table are of 2 different materials (Quartz and Granite). Kelly knew that using a different material for the large table top would keep it from feeling too heavy.
Kelly wanted to extend the upper cabinets all the way to the ceiling. This required removal of the bulkhead, but to avoid costly repairs to the ceiling over the window, she added a valance with recessed lighting – a beautiful solution that the homeowner loves.
As is in many older homes there was a linen closet beside the kitchen. Kelly removed the closet and added a recessed pantry which increased storage and fits perfectly with the kitchen design.
