Main Floor Reno: Before & After Featured in the BILD Calgary Home Reno Tour

Legacy Designer James Ellis applied his keen aesthetic and functional expertise to transform this dark and dated main floor. We asked James for a peek behind the curtain of his process; as you read the details below you will see James’ sharp attention to detail and understanding of the client’s wishes on display throughout.

What were your client’s goals for the reno?

  1. Create more kitchen functionality and storage
  2. Accommodate seating for four children at the kitchen island
  3. Lighten and brighten the feel of the entire main floor
  4. Showcase the fireplace as a focal point
  5. Create more usable space in the laundry room

How did you meet those goals?

1Create more kitchen functionality and storage

All spaces in the kitchen were geared toward the functional needs of a large family who hosts often.
Tall upper cabinets fit to the ceiling to maximize upper storage.
Storage and accessories were designed around the family’s specific needs. For example, we placed long drawers beside the fridge for easy access to lunch kits, containers and more.

2Accommodate seating for four children at the kitchen island

Removed the corner pantry to extend the space available for the large island.
Seating optimized around island for use as homework space.
Outfitted the island with multiple power outlets to charge kids’ technology and create a natural central gathering place.

3Lighten and brighten the feel of the entire main floor

Pared a soft grey wall colour with lighter flooring to give an overall soft feel.
Painted all bases and cases white to brighten the main living areas and highlight the view outside the large windows.
Removed the pendant lighting above the kitchen island and added LED pots.
Added light fixtures throughout the main floor that feel “light and airy”.

4Showcase the fireplace as a focal point

Installed stone on the fireplace bump-out all the way to the ceiling.
Designed built-ins around the fireplace to draw visual focus and maximize storage.
Added an inset for the television – a cool custom addition, recessed and panelled in the same colour as the built-ins and kitchen island.
Used matching moldings at the ceiling to give the space a complete and refined look.

5Create more usable space in the laundry room

Removed an existing bench and added an entire wall of cabinets.
Removed the old closet to add second wall of cabinets.
Tiled the back wall behind the laundry bar and sink to prevent water damage.
Added countertop and cabinets for a work space above the washer and dryer.

Were there any unique challenges?

  1. The original kitchen had narrow empty wall to the right of the picture window which looked awkward and was a waste of usable space. It was a tight space, so our solution was to add a valance and smaller cabinets to both sides. Not only did we add cabinet storage, but we managed to make the awkward space look complete and balanced.
  2. For the home office entry our client wanted to replace two French doors with barn doors, but the existing opening was too wide. We were able to accommodate the bar door by reducing the door frame width.
  3. In the laundry room, we removed the original closet which exposed all of the mechanical and wiring. To avoid major rework we bumped out the cabinets from the wall by using a void and ordering a different panel size. This was a challenging install but the end result is excellent.
  4. Our client wanted to keep some of the original woodwork on the main floor including all railings, landings and bookshelves. We needed the old elements to blend in with the new so we added similar colours as accents on the kitchen island. This visual connection allowed the old and new to work together.

What design and functional details would you like to highlight?

  1. The home office barn door is visually interesting and adds a unique feel to the entire main floor.
  2. The kitchen backsplash adds a touch of grey with an interesting tile shape and subtle reflective surface to give a the space a finished look.
  3. The kitchen accessories are great – we included a mixer shelf and pull outs for spices and knives, drawer insets and more.
  4. On the kitchen island, instead of a dead end panel we used a 4 inch deep cabinet for additional storage.
  5. The family frequently hosts dinner parties so the wine fridge in the kitchen island is a major convenience.

What is your client’s favorite part of the new space?

Too many to choose from! The entire colour palette – the whole main floor feels cozy and inviting. They love how everything pulled together.
