Family-Friendly Transitional Kitchen and Home Renovation

For this family of six, designing storage, accessories and function around the family's specific needs was a top priority for this renovation. In the kitchen, James added tall upper cabinets to maximize storage. Long drawers beside the fridge allow for easy access to commonly used items such as lunch kits and containers.
Other kitchen accessories include a mixer stand, drawer inserts and pull-outs for spices and knives. Seating around the island was optimized for use as a homework space. The island was also outfitted with multiple power outlets to charge kids' technology and to create a natural central gathering space.

Lighter flooring and paint colors were selected to achieve brightness throughout the home. Additional light fixtures were included to make the space feel light and airy. In the family room, the fireplace was updated with built-ins that draw visual focus and increase storage. A custom TV inset was included in the same color as the built-ins and kitchen island. Matching ceiling moldings give the space a refined and unified look. In the laundry room, a bench was replaced with an entire wall of cabinetry. Tiles were added behind the laundry bar to prevent water damage and a countertop was included as a workspace.

The homeowners love the elements of Transitional style that James was able to balance throughout the project. Our client wanted to keep some of the original woodwork including all railings, landings and bookshelves. The older elements needed to blend in with the new, so similar colors were added as accents on the kitchen island. This visual connection allowed the old and new to work together. The end result was a home that feels cozy and inviting, exactly what the homeowners wanted.
