Cabinet Care

How should I clean my cabinets?

We recommend only using a damp microfiber cloth to clean cabinets. If you're trying to remove grease, you may use a small amount of grease fighting dish soap (not dishwasher detergent) mixed with water on the cloth, then wipe off immediately with a clean, damp cloth.

When cleaning with a microfiber cloth, how much water should I use?

The cloth should be no more than damp. If you're using a bucket of water, the cloth you're using should be dipped in and then fully wringed out before wiping the cabinet.

How do I take care of my Melamine drawer bottoms?

It's important to keep the drawers free of water. Dishes should be dried before putting away and water drops or spills should be wiped up immediately.

How much weight can the drawers support?

This depends on the drawer slides and manufacturer. The weight limits are often stamped on the slide itself. If you have trouble finding that information, please and we'll be happy to look up the specifications for your drawers.

What can I do if my shelf is sagging?

Often a shelf is sagging because there is too much weight on it. Try to redistribute the weight and the sagging should stop. If your cabinet has a center stile, it's possible the clip has fallen off. Please see this video and if you're missing the clip.

How much weight can my floating shelves hold?

We wouldn't recommend more than 30lbs per floating shelf. If you notice any sagging, there is too much weight on the shelf.

Why do some of my cabinets have center stiles and some do not?

Center stiles are typically used in cabinets over 33" wide. This depends on the cabinet manufacturer, style and material. Center stiles are for support and are installed for a reason. Please do not remove the center support from your cabinetry.

Can I change my hardware?

You can! You may want to find hardware with the same 'center-to-center' measurement so you can use the same screw holes (and avoid drilling extra holes).

Tips

Don't leave standing water on your laminate countertop, especially at the seam.
Don't lean on your cabinet doors.
Don't allow steam near your cabinets (use your hood fan or move the kettle away).

What needs to be prepped in my home before my service call?

If you're having drawers adjusted or changed out, please make sure they are empty before our service technician's arrival. Also, it would be helpful to clear out any areas that the tech will need to access (counters, cabinets, pantry, etc.). If you're having painting or spraying done, you may want to arrange for children and pets to be out of the home and have a few windows opened. Feel free to ask your coordinator beforehand how to best prepare.

What can I expect as protection from damage in my home during a service call?

Our technicians will remove their footwear and use moving blankets and floor protection as required.

What should I do if my door finish appears to be peeling or I have white marks showing at the inside edges?

Does Legacy charge to do an assessment?

Yes, but you may be able to eliminate the need for an assessment by sending a .

I'm selling my house and would like my cabinets spruced up. Can Legacy help?

While changes like these may appear straightforward, modifying existing cabinetry can be technically complex. Over time, certain finishes, materials, door styles, and construction methods become discontinued or evolve to meet new standards. As a result, achieving a perfect match with older cabinetry isn't always possible. And these challenges increase the likelihood of results that fall short of both your expectations and our high standards of quality.

At Legacy Kitchens, our expertise and focus are complete kitchen renovations and new cabinetry. We don't specialize in cabinet refacing (replacing door and drawer fronts) or refinishing (such as painting existing cabinetry). However, there are excellent local companies that do specialize in these services and can provide deliver the kind of results you're looking for if restoration or cosmetic improvements are of interest.

Can I make colour changes?

When adding new cabinetry to an existing space, colour matching can be a challenge. As styles and trends evolve, some door styles and finishes may become discontinued. Even when the same product line is available, natural aging and exposure to light can cause visible inconsistencies in finish, colour, and grain over time. These subtle differences can noticeably affect the overall appearance, even when using similar materials.

Are there structural challenges?

Cabinetry is typically designed and installed as a complete system. Modifying part of that system can impact structural integrity or intended function and may interfere with components like lighting, ventilation, or plumbing.

What are the cost implications?

Cost is another important consideration. Beyond cabinetry and installation costs, there may be additional items to address – items such as countertops, toe kicks, paneling, or molding adjustments. This is especially true when integrating new elements with existing cabinetry.
